- Benjamin Franklin- Franklin was a writer, scientist, and inventor. He became wealthy and very respected in the colonies for his work.
Important Information
- The Colonies usually offered a better way of life, cheap land, and a greater opportunity to earn a living to people.
- The voyage to the colonies was very dangerous and long.
- The voyage took an average of 4 months.
- Many Europeans came to the colonies for the following reasons: poor harvests, wars, few jobs, taxes were high and rent was high.
- Indentured servants and slaves made up a large part of the population in the mid 1700s.
- The Southern Colonies grew the cash crops; tobacco, indigo, and rice.
- The Middle Colonies grew wheat and corn.
- The New England Colonies earned a living building ships, fishing and harvesting lumber.
- Triangular Trade route consisted of trading goods between the English Colonies, Africa, and the West Indies.
- Slavery was much more common in the south than in the north.
- Planters were usually wealthy and enjoyed a life of luxury.
- Overseers were in charge of the daily life on plantation.
- Benjamin Franklin was a writer, inventor and scientist.
- Franklin started Philadelphia's first University, Post Office, Volunteer Fire Department, Hospital, Public Library and Newspaper.
