New England Colonies
Important People
- King Charles I- Gave a charter to the colonists to settle in Massachusetts.
- John Winthrop- Leader of the Puritans, also a successful lawyer.
- Roger Williams- Founded the settlement of Providence in Rhode Island because of beliefs.
- Anne Hutchinson- Forced to leave Massachusetts because of beliefs. Settled in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
- Thomas Hooker- Founded the colony of Connecticut. Believed each church should be independent and choose their own leaders.
- Metacomet- Wampanoag leader, AKA King Philip. Fought against the colonist for land.

Important Information
- Puritans received a charter from King Charles I to start a colony in Massachusetts.
- John Winthrop became the leader of the Massachusetts colony.
- The four New England Colonies are New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
- The land in New England was hilly and had rocky and thin soil which was bad for farming.
- The Puritans view education as highly important.
- Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and Thomas Hooker started new settlements because of religious disagreements.
- Metacomet was also know as King Philip and was Massasoit's son.

- Dutch founded a colony called New Netherland with a capitol of New Amsterdam.
- England took over the colony of New Netherland and renamed it New York.
- England renamed the settlement of New Amsterdam, New York City.
- The Middle Colonies were: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York.
- William Penn, a Quaker, started the colony of Pennsylvania.
- William Penn paid the Lenni Lenape for land to start their colony.
- Philadelphia became the most populated city by 1760.
- The Middle Colonies were called the "breadbasket of the colonies".

- The Southern Colonies were Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
- Maryland was created for Catholics by Lord Baltimore.
- Georgia was created for debtors.
- Tomochichi was the leader of the Yamacraw and met with General James Oglethorpe.
- Georgia was named after King George II.
- Four crops that grew well in the southern colonies were: corn, rice, indigo, and tobacco.
- Carolina was later divided into two colonies; North Carolina and South Carolina.
